I have a 3000 word assignment due in next week. I have not done any research/reading/anything at all. In my defence I have a lot going on right now. I am at the end of my second year, and I've only ever spent around 1-2 days/a night on an essay/assignment. I usually do pretty well. However, I don't understand this assignment title, I have no idea at all where the essay is going (I usually decide the answer then research according to my pre-defined conclusion) and I only have the seven days to write it in, and research. Seven days may sound like a lot, but I am also on clinical placement for my healthcare related degree, am down on my hours and will be working 40-50 hours on placement.
Should I apply for an extension, asap? Or, will it probably be do-able? I'll be eternally grateful for any tips/advice/kind words of wisdom.
You're unlikely to be granted an extension unless you have an out of the ordinary reason for not having completed the work. It's a harsh system at times, especially when there's a lot on, but it's the reason it's in place; to reward those people who can make the deadlines. You can give it a go, I'd start by talking to your tutor, or the lecturer who set you the assignment, but they're likely to say similar to what I've said.
Unless there's some extenuating circumstances (NOT just a busy week, as they'll say you should have planned ahead better) then I can't see you having much luck. ( by Billton) What excuse would you use? When I apply for mitigating circumstances in order to get an extension it's like being fed to the tigers. Can you just apply for an extension when you need it? I am scared about applying for an extension, especially so near to the deadline. I do have a reason/mitigating circumstance (illness of a close relative that I help to care for) and that genuinely has impacted on my ability to write the assignment.

Still worried though as marking lecturer and module leader are very strict. ( by LaChiquita) I am scared about applying for an extension, especially so near to the deadline. You may as well ask, make sure you stress the point about the ill relative, as without that you've got no chance really. It doesn't go to your lecturers/Unit leader- it actually goes to a Board who read through your application and decide whether to extend it (usually to 10 days). If you have mitigating circumstances then get as much evidence as you can and speak to your lecturers/Unit leader aswel. The best thing to do is to let everyone know (not in detail, but the jist) Good Luck. ( by Billton) At my Uni, mitigating circumstances can be applied for even on the day of submission.

There won't be any negative consequences so long as you're telling the truth. I've applied mitigating circumstances twice this year due to being super poorly, but I had hospital notes and Doctor's notes and work sick notes etc. If you submit it late and aren't given an extension then you'll probably score 40% ish. ( by LaChiquita) Just wanted to say thanks for the replies.
I applied and was granted a 10 day extension. Uni were actually really nice about it.
I'm still a bit worried about negative repercussions, but at least now I can de-stress a bit There's not really much in the way of repercussions you need to worry about. With things like this they're treated on a case by case basis, so as this has been granted and signed off, you can forget about it and get back on schedule with the rest of the work.
